The kitchen is zoned for comfort during large gatherings.
Our clients' home started as the typical arrangement of isolated rooms and no large family gathering areas found in many ranch homes in the Bay Area. They were looking to update the entire home and create more openness between the public spaces to accommodate their modern lifestyle. The most dramatic work was done in the main living areas of the home. The kitchen was gutted, and all services upgraded. A bearing wall between the existing eating nook and the kitchen was opened, which created views and volume by uniting the two rooms in a new L-shaped plan. A closet was rearranged to allow space for a built-in hutch.
The kitchen is zoned for comfort during large gatherings. The ovens and cook-top are separated widely with one sink between, allowing two or three cooks to easily maneuver. The refrigerator and pantry are moved into the circulation path, allowing easy access for all cooks, and keeping children out of the cooking areas.
The most noticeable features of this kitchen are light and color. A flood of natural light illuminates the interior spaces via skylights, which are placed over the island and at the dining table. The color palate is based on tones of amber, which are used throughout the home, and blue is introduced to complement. The rest of the home was also renovated. The formal living room now has a great room feel and is used for formal dining as well. The bedrooms and bathrooms all got a facelift with updated lighting plans and new finishes and trim. It is now a home that is modern and casual - perfect for a young Bay Area family.
