A Victorian flat was transformed into a contemporary loft
This Victorian flat with a stunning San Francisco view had fallen into disrepair when SEA began this project. Although the original redwood framing, high ceilings, and the view remained for the new owner, most of the historic detailing had been lost over the years. The shell of space was seen as a blank canvas for invention, and a Victorian flat was transformed into a contemporary loft to accommodate our client's desire for a more open and modern home. While the bedrooms and entry hall remained untouched, the living and kitchen areas of the flat were gutted to the studs. The roof framing was re-engineered and the ceiling and interior walls were eliminated, doubling the height and creating one large space for contemporary living. A loft was captured at the entrance to the room, to serve as a home office for our client. French doors and a balcony were added to take advantage of the beautiful city view.
Victorian and contemporary styles happily coexist throughout the home. Victorian trim and detailing is salvaged in some areas and replaced in others, while a contemporary design is showcased in the renovated areas which includes concrete countertops, stainless steel trim, and custom cabinetry in dark stained cherry wood.
