A room that reflects our client's personality
The challenge of this project was to add a bit of the country to a long and narrow California ranch home. Our primary goals for this project were to express the clients' personality in the new space and to change a dated and broken up floorplan into a modern open area supportive of a busy family lifestyle. By reconfiguring the space and designing a small addition off the back, we were able to meet all of our clients' goals and budget.The new space now consists of a great room which is anchored by a large island with seating. The island separates the living and dining spaces from the kitchen, making the kitchen very functional by connecting the other spaces to the cook, and creating a place to have lunch or do homework. Direct access to the backyard through the dining room makes watching the kids and entertaining easy and convenient.
The kitchen is filled with interesting storage opportunities such as glass cabinetry on either side of the range, a wine rack and cookbook shelf that flank the sides of the island, open storage for pots and pans directly across from the range, and a desk area which creates a family message center. The combination of oak floors and knotty alder cabinetry keeps this large space cozy and warm; lending a bit of country charm, authenticity, and personality to the home.2nd Place winner
